Doctor/company: Operating theatre complex

Operating theatres

Cosmipolis Clinic has a state-of-the-art operating theatre complex comprising four extremely sophisticated operating rooms and a recovery room. Surgeries can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.

Utmost attention has been paid to creating a safe and hygienic area for both patient and surgeon. Laminar flow and a continuous circulation of fresh air guarantee a sterile working environment and reduce the risk of infection to an absolute minimum. The grounded floor covering prevents electrical interferences between medical equipment. A powerful emergency generator effortlessly takes over in case of a power failure.

Presence of anaesthetist

Any surgery that takes place under general anaesthesia is always performed in the presence of a qualified anaesthetist. The anaesthetist will meet you before your procedure and prepare you for the anaesthesia. Another task performed by the anaesthetist is ensuring pain relief after surgery.

Narcosis

Anaesthesia, also known as narcosis, comes from Greek and means ‘without sensation’. When an anaesthetic is administered, you no longer feel any pain for some time. There are various forms of anaesthesia: local and general.

Local anaesthesia is administered by a physician, but does not require the presence of an anaesthetist. A small amount of anaesthetic is injected into and around the area where one needs to be treated. You are conscious during the entire surgery and can get back on your feet immediately afterwards. You do not need to fast for this type of anaesthesia but just need to follow a few simple guidelines. This form of anaesthesia does not require an overnight stay, so you can go home safely afterwards. We do however recommend that you be accompanied by your partner or family member, so that you are not required to drive a vehicle yourself.

General anaesthesia is the form of narcosis where you are fully asleep. You do not remember anything about your surgery afterwards. An anaesthetist must be present during this procedure. In the past, people often felt nauseated after general anaesthesia. Today, people hardly experience any discomfort. For this type of anaesthesia, patients must be fasting when they come in for surgery. This means that no liquid or solid food should be consumed for at least six hours before admission. Depending on the duration of the anaesthesia, you may or may not have to stay overnight.

Besides the above forms of anaesthesia, we also make a distinction between regional anaesthesia and local anaesthesia with sedation. Whichever form of anaesthesia is chosen, this is always done in consultation between the surgeon and the anaesthetist.

Some people are afraid when they hear about general anaesthesia. There’s absolutely no need to be afraid. In case of any doubt, talk to your doctor for reassurance.
